The inhabitants of New Bermudas were not included in this arrangement, but they were to work three years for the colony and then to have their freedom. Those who labored for the colony received a certain allowance from the store and could work their land one month in the year. * The general system adopted by the Crown after the disso- lution of the Company was to grant to each person coming to Virginia fifty acres of land, which were held upon the pay- ment of an annual quitrent of one shilling... for every fifty acres. The manner of taking up land was as follows. The person desiring land went before the county court and made affidavit of the number of persons he had brought into the colony. 2 The clerk of the court made a certificate of the same which was transmitted to the Secretary's office. If it was regular the petitioner was given a warrant which "was shown to the county surveyor, who was required to lay out the lands where the petitioner desired, unless they had already been appropriated.
