Definition. Psychasthenia may be defined as a nervous condition affecting those of a well-marked neurotic heredity, who, though they escape insanity, still show a characteristic train of symptoms, both mental and physical, which generally affect the sufferers throughout their entire lives.
/Etiology. A tainted heredity is undoubtedly the chief in fact, the only predisposing cause of this affection. Exhausting processes, such as overstudy, prolonged lactation, pregnancy, and sexual excesses ; th...e result of severe illness ; chronic intoxica- tion from drugs, as alcohol and carbon disulphide ; sudden shock and long-continued mental strain, etc. , are all possible exciting causes of psychasthenia.
The large variety of possible exciting causes of the malady shows one that each case should be carefully studied from an aetiological point of view, and its treatment carried out on this basis, for it is obvious that treatment producing good results in psychasthenia resulting, say, from a railway accident is by no means the treatment one would adopt for a case due to chronic alcoholism.
