The Kennebec Journal now said that he had expressed in private conversation his sense of the impro- priety of Calhoun's letter to the British Minister justifying the annexation of Texas because of the needs of slavery, that a tool of Calhoun brought the matter forward in most exaggerated style and frightened the Southern Senators from voting for him.
It is known today that there had been much opposition to his nomina- tion among the Maine Representatives, presumably on account of his views on the subject of slavery.
