To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
' At a time when the leading exponent in Britain of the study of social organization could invite his readers to 'suppose a people whose old men monopoUzed the young women, among whom there arose the custom of handing superfluous wives to the sons of the sister' (Rivers, 1914, Vol. II, p. 61), the inter- pretation of social institutions, at whatever level of development, as systems in which universally necessary ends are attained by the co- operation of organized groups was not only a salutary ...corrective but, as far as anthropological teaching in Britain was concerned, an innovation. Its weakness is that it does not account for all social phenomena, not that it does not account for any. During most of the period when Malinowski was teaching in London it was taken for granted that an anthropologist in the field studied 'the culture' of 'a society'. Only later did the words 'culture' and 'society' come to stand for quite different approaches to social phenomena. Malinowski insisted that the field-worker must study the 'whole cul- ture', but if he had been driven to admit the necessity for some elimina- tion, he would have given priority to what he called 'institutions'.
