THE HEAD AND NECK 1165 The muscular tissue of the tongue is of the striped variety.
It forms two sets of muscles, namely, extrinsic and intrinsic. The extrinsic muscles are those which have their origins outside the tongue, and their insertions into it. They are as follows : (i) the genio-hyo-glossus, (2) the hyo-glossus (including the chondro- glossus), (3) the stylo-glossus, and (4) the palato-glossus, all of which have been already described.
