I40 A MANUAL OF PHYSIOLOGY Pass the crook of a walking-stick through the handle of a portmanteau or other convenient weight placed on the floor, rest the middle of the stick on the edge of a chair and, pressing the other end of the stick downwards, lever up the portmanteau. You have made a lever of the first order. On lengthening the arm of the lever on which the weight is slung, you will have to exert greater forc...e, but the range of movement of the portmanteau will be increased. Shorten this arm and the opposite occurs. Sling the portmanteau on the walking-stick, laying one end of the stick on a chair and holding the other end in your hand. You have now made a lever of the second order. When the weight is near the chair it requires little effort to support it. Allow the portmanteau to slip along the stick till it hangs near your hand, — it feels very heavy. Take a spring balance, place the hook round the end of the stick and, holding the handle of the balance, support the stick by it.
