It is not known to be as common or destructive as several of the other wood-rots of oaks. Mature and over-mature trees are affected. It is never found in the tops of trees but is limited to the base of the trunk OAK DISEASES 253 and the larger roots. The decay extends from the surface of the ground upward m the heartwood for a distance of one to a few feet and in its final stages leaves a large hollow cavity.
