But M. Gaston Paris somewhat later ad- vanced a strong plea in favour of Welsh originals for lost Anglo-Norman poems, themselves the direct sources for the extant lays. Within the last decade a number of German scholars, headed by Professor Zimmer, have returned to the exclusively- Breton theory, supporting their position by philological, geographical, and historical arguments ; and these have in turn been attacked by MM.
