...calls the lives sacrificed by the regiment at Fort Wagner, near Charleston, South Carolina. Robert Gould Shaw is the central figure in the composition. On horseback, he leads his troops, as they parade down Beacon Street, off to war. They are guided by a hovering, symbolic female figure. At the dedication of the monument, some thirty years after the bat- tle, Saint-Gaudens witnessed the return of the balance of the troops. They were then aged, mounted on horseback, marching in the opposite direc- tion of their departure.
