Compositionally, Crawford's mourner depends upon the female figures in both Thorvaldsen's Christian Charity (Fig. 11) and the Countess Josefa Borkowska tomb (Fig. 12). The proportions and posture of Crawford's mourner are identical to the figures in the Thorvaldsen works, with the minor rearrangement of hands to cover her face and hold the urn, which was simply symbolic of death, without specific reference to cremation.
