The usual work of clearing houses, except the one in Chicago, is to keep open trades, in an orderly way, up to date with respect to margins. The membere file their clearing sheets and with them, in case of loss, a check to cover the added margin resulting from the day's decline in price. Conversely, those whose holdings are on the winning side receive checks from the clearing house cov- ering their gains. Such clearing houses are organizations separate from the exchange. -Boyle, Jumes E. , op. ...Cit. Y p. 79. 133 MARKETING AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS In Chicago the clearing house is part of the Board of Trade. The work of this clearing house is to handle trades that are ready for final settlement. The settlement will be made in one of three ways: (1) by actual delivery of the grain; (2) by the delivery of a warehouse receipt, which entitles the holder to the grain; (3) by the matching of contracts for like amounts. If, as may occasionally happen, one trader buys from another, and then sells back to the same man, the clearing house will have nothing to do except to check up the difference in price, see that it is paid, and cancel the entire transaction.
