Prior to Stanhope, Boulogne, March 29, 1715. THE YEARS OF TROUBLE 231 Thus ill at ease in body, Prior crept home to Eng- land. He had grounds to be also ill at ease in mind, for he could have had little doubt of the disposition of the Whig ministry to the employes and friends of their pre- decessors. Already he had been superseded by Lord Stair in the ministry in Paris, and had been roughly commanded to yield up all his papers to the Earl^. This he probably had done without compunction or diffi...culty, for he knew there was little in them that could compromise his position or that of his friends. He there- fore obeyed the command at once, to the intense jubila- tion of the Whigs, who thought hereby to obtain the fullest evidence against Lord Oxford^. But he did not anticipate the treatment he was to receive. Not only was there no joyful welcome as in 1697, but on June 9 at the demand of the Secret Committee, the Speaker granted a warrant for his arrest, and he was taken into nominal custody in order to be examined by the Com- mittee^.
