By some miracle one of the new wolves had shifted before they could collar him, and he helped Matthew to remove his. The other two wolves were native and quickly returned to the woods. They’d made a break for it, vowing to meet up again once they’d reunited with their packs. The loggers must have found out of their escape within the hour, which was why he had the natural instinct to hide when he heard them, even before his mind was fully clear.
