McOlellan contrived so to arrange things that Pope should not get a man of these reinforcements; but should be left with his feeble force of less than forty thousand men to a death-grapple with the enemy that had lately defeated McClel- lan's once splendid army of one hundred and fifty thousand men : in other words, should be left to— I use Gen. MoClellan's own choice phraselogy— **^e^ out of his 9Cfape,** And I shall show that so completely successful was he that not a single man ever reached Pope after McClellan arrived at Alexandria, In this expose I shall take up events in their chronological order, beginning with the date of the first dispatch to McClellan with reference to the forwarding of re- tnforeements.
