Miss Nightingale thus began her appren- ticeship to a noble work. This w r as not done in the spirit of faddism nor with the effervescence of a brief enthusiasm so often seen in young women. She extended her sphere of study to the hospitals and asylums of London. These institutions were large and liberally endowed, but they abounded in abuses and defects of every description.
