As Feb. 18 seems to have been the day first f...ixed upon by the church for this festival, we are at once directed to the origin of the whole fiction. The story of the Assumption of the Virgin (whose fkbnlous history has so often been found, in the course of tliis work, corresponding with that of the Egyp- tian Isis, the prototype of Diana, Ceres, Proserpine, Juno, Venus, &c.) is no other than a copy of the rape of Proserpine, which occurred in February.
The memory of tills event is preserved in Sicily by burning, on the Virgin's Purification, Feb.
