According to the Liber Pontificalis, Leo II, in 682, commanded that this festival should be held in April. Nicholas I, about 860, ordered the " Gloria in exc...elsis" to be sung at mass (Trithem. De Script. ) ; but Durandus attributes that order to Boniface (But. Div. Off. , I. VI, c. 75). In many places the altars are washed with wine and water, and ornamented with boughs, particularly of GLOSSARY. 159 savin (lb. , c. 16). This is in imitation of the pagan ceremony called La- vatio Matris De&m, in which the statues of the gods were washed (Arnob. Contra Gentes, I.
