Reference has been made to the principle of inheritance in the constitution of the Loyal Legion. It will perhaps be a surprise to some of the best informed members, upon matters connected with the order, to learn that since the Illinois Commandery was instituted, there have been one hundred and thirty-four cases of membership by succession. And one of these is that of Arthur Charles Ducat, Jr. , who was educated at West Point, and is Captain in the Twenty-fourth Infantry, U. S. Army. 76 ^etnoxv.... CHAPTER XII. BUYS TRACTS OF LAND— TRAVELS ABROAD. In 1868 General Ducat first began to gratify his inherited passion for ownership of lands. Since commencing business at Chicago his home had been in the city, and sometimes in the West Division, sometimes in the North Division, but his constant longing was to have an establishment in the country. The suburban towns were then all new, and hardly to be distinguished from the open country which surrounded them. Evanston, now the largest of Chicago's suburbs, had, in 1868, not many inhabitants, and handsome improve- ments there were few and far between.
