Let us now see what was the right and order of succes- sion in each of these four different parts.
It is evident from the treaties of 1750 and 1773, which referred solely to the ducal parts of Schleswig and Hol- stein that the part which the dukes of Gottorp had taken in the co-regency, did not, and indeed could not, alter anything either in the right and order of succ...ession, such as they were established for the royal parts of Schleswig and of Holstein, or in the title of the royal line to the co-regency. From this follows that the eventual right of succession of the younger royal branch has been left altogether intact, and, consequently, that in case the male line of the elder royal branch should become extinct, the males of the younger branch* would be called upon to succeed in the royal parts of the two duchies, * Viz., the Duke of Augustenburg.
H 4 104 GBUNER ON THE SUCCESSION This is not the case in the ducal parts of the two duchies^ where a new order of succession was introduced by the treaties of 1750 and 1773; for, as to the ducal parts of Schlestoigi the Grand Duke has explicitly renounced it in favour of the King of Denmark and his heirs and successors to the royal throne.
