To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
We found there fouror five Jesuits, very polite and instructed, who took care of theprodigious building erected there for more than a hundred Jesuits andnumberless scholars. A church was there nearly finished, of rotundashape, of a grandeur and size which surprised me. Gold, painting, sculpture, the richest ornaments of all kinds, are distributed everywherewith prodigality but taste. The architecture is correct and admirable, the marble is most exquisite; jasper, porphyry, lapis, polished, wrea...thed, and fluted columns, with their capitals and their ornaments ofgilded bronze, a row of balconies between each altar with little steps ofmarble to ascend them, and the cage encrusted; the altars and that whichaccompanied them admirable. In a word, the church was one of the mostsuperb edifices in Europe, the best kept up, and the most magnificentlyadorned. We took there the best chocolate I ever tasted, and, after somehours of curiosity and admiration, we regained our road. On the 15th, we arrived at Vittoria, where I found a deputation of theprovince, whom I invited to supper, and the next day to breakfast.
