It was evident that any attempt to carry this position by a coup-de-main would entail a most serious loss of life, for the artillery of the enemy equalled our own in number, and outweighed it in calibre, and they enjoyed the immense advantage of an entrenched cover. It would have been the case of Ferozeshuhur over again; the General, therefore, determined to turn their position. The Volunteer Cavalry was directed to bring in some of the neighbouring villagers, who were minutely and separately q...uestioned as to the nature of the ground on both the enemy ^8 flanks, and the by-roads leading to their camp. From a careful collation of these reports, it appeared that the ground lying between the enemy^s left and the river was more elevated, while that on their right was low and swampy, and moreover commanded by the railway em- bankment. The General resolved, therefore, to select their left flank for his attack, and to leave his field hos- pital, baggage, and camp followers in an enclosure at Maharajpore, with a strong guard and two guns.
