" Such are, in part, the exhortations w...ith which Ralegh sought to strengthen the resolution, and to sustain the spirits of one whom he thought soon to consign to the neglect and indif- ference of the world.
The death of Ralegh and of the other prisoners was now daily expected at Winchester ; and, on the ninth of De- cember, the King, at Wilton, signed the warrants for the execution of Cobham, Grey, and Sir Griffin Markham; Brooke, Clarke, Watson, and the two priests, having pre- viously suffered, l^eanwhile the benefit of spiritual aid was afforded to the condemned men, the Bishop of Chi- chester being intrusted with the awful responsibility of preparing the dastard soul of Cobham for its departure from a state which he had too fondly valued.
