" Let my sorrows, *' snid he, "go into my grave with me, and he buried in the dust. And, seeing it is not the will of God that ever I shall see you more in this life, bear it patiently, and with a heart like thyself. " He entreated her, not by seclusion and fruitless sorrow, to lose the bene- fits of exertion ; " thy mournings cannot avail me : I am but dust. Remember your poor child for his father's sake, who chose you and loved you in his happiest time. " Such are, in part, the exhortations w...ith which Ralegh sought to strengthen the resolution, and to sustain the spirits of one whom he thought soon to consign to the neglect and indif- ference of the world.
The death of Ralegh and of the other prisoners was now daily expected at Winchester ; and, on the ninth of De- cember, the King, at Wilton, signed the warrants for the execution of Cobham, Grey, and Sir Griffin Markham; Brooke, Clarke, Watson, and the two priests, having pre- viously suffered, l^eanwhile the benefit of spiritual aid was afforded to the condemned men, the Bishop of Chi- chester being intrusted with the awful responsibility of preparing the dastard soul of Cobham for its departure from a state which he had too fondly valued.
