Governor Morton then entered nptjn his second term. lie was now forty-two years old and in the prime of his physical and men- tal strength. His energy, patriotism, executive ability, and fer- tility of resources, were a theme of general comment. His services to tiie State and Nation were known and honored everywhere. At this time there were secret societies forme...d all over the State. Tlie "Knights of the Golden Gircle" was organized before the war and had members in Indiana at the outbreak of the struggle. About the first of December it was discovered that the order of the "Golden Circle" had lieen intrcjtluced into the Federal camp at Indianapolis. Tiiis created much an.xiety and vigorous measures were taken to eradicate tiie order from the army. The Governor received information that many of the Knights were armed and were plotting mischief. A prc^ject for the assassination of Morton was also conceived.
