The scene was fearfully sublime. When the darkness of evening settled down over the contending fleets, the horizon was illuminated for many miles by the incessant discharge of two thousand pieces of artillery, and the earth and ocean shook with the prodigious concussion. The vast sea of blazing fire appeared like some fierce volcano, whose mouth belched forth an ocean of flame in the midst of the watery waste. At length, by nine o'clock, the English had obtained a complete and unparalleled vict...ory. About that time the L'Orient, a vast ship of one hundred and twenty guns, which carried the French admiral, was found to be on fire, and soon the flames extended beyond the possibility of EXPLOSION OF THE L'ORIENT. 223 their being subdued. As the fire approached the magazine, many of the sailors and officers fled from the ship ; but her commander determined to die the death of the heroic and unconquerable ; and remained on board. At length, at ten o'clock the explosion took place. The concussion was terrific without a parallel in ancient or modern war- fare.
