He had inherited a vigorous constitution, and hard work in the open air, amid the rugged hills of his native town, had given him the buoyancy of good health, and taught him habits of industry that he retained through life. When scarcely emerged from child- hood he took up the burdens of life without experience in worldly affairs, and with no resources save his ov/n untiring industry.
