Our service together on a very laborious committee gave me unusual opportuni- ties to study the character of his mind and heart, and to know that, in the best meaning of the words, he was a true, genuine, manly man. Foremost among his high qualities was his unselfishness. He was one of the few men we meet in this ambitious tussle of public life who is willing to take up a difficult and tangled subject, patiently work it out, and put his results into the com- mon fund of work as cheerfully and faithfully as if the duties and the honors were all his own.
