MEMOIR OF ZACHARIAH ALLEN. 37 inventor ; ^ and he oft-times turned aside from his usual pursuits to assist the discouraged in per- fecting inventions that in time proved to be use- ful, and sometimes to explain to over-sanguine persons why their inventions, or conceits, must fail to produce the results sought. Electricity was early a favorite study, and it was one of the last studies in which he was engaged. His theo- ries on that subject, explained in his last impor- tant work, on Solar Light ...and Heat, drew forth favorable comments from advanced scientific men on both sides of the ocean ; and a second edition of this book was promptly issued to supply the demand.^ He was, like his Huguenot ancestors, habitu- ally hopeful and cheerful. However dark the night or mysterious the event, he saw rays of light, and ground for hope and comfort. Ten months before his departure, after hurrying on a bright spring Sunday morning to the church of which he was a lifelong attendant and a commu- nicant, he was oppressed by the closeness of the atmosphere, and fainted.
