We skirted the north of the village, and before long caught sight of Mr.
Ellison and Mr. Stanley about 150 yards away.

We tried to talk peaceably with them, but they would not let us go on. We therefore went along slowly back, being followed by the crowd of at least 60 to 100. We had previously heard a rumour that the East Gates were to be opened at midday, and that the Revolutionaries were coming out to sack our place and presumably kill the foreigners. It seemed, therefore, in view of what had happened to the people in the South Suburb, that we were returning to certain death.
