Any readers who are intimately acquainted with the distances by road between the Lancashire towns which have been named, may have noticed that the figures given in the accounts quot...ed are not strictly correct. They were what were known as " computed distances, " a customary standard which everybody knew was inaccurate, but conformed to none the less. Ogilby, in his Survey of the Roads t published in 1675, although he gave measured miles, was constrained to give side by side with them the computed distances. Thus the twelve miles from Wigan to Preston wKich Celia Fiennes found so long, and which even by computation should be fourteen, he makes to be sixteen miles four furlongs.
