As early as the fourteenth century John de Stafford had a bell-foundry at Leicester, and was followed by others, of whom Betts was one. Betts was Mayor of Leicester in 1529, and is styled in the Eoll of Mayors, Bellfounder of Allsaints and ancestor of the Newcombes.
