His early life was' passed upon a blue grass farm, attending first the neighborhood school and then a military academy in his home town. In 1880 he entered Central university of Kentucky and graduated in the class of 1884 with the degree of B. A. He taught a boy's high school in Winchester, Kentucky, two years, and was then sub-professor for two years in his alma mater, after which, in 1888, he entered the law department of the University of Virginia, under Professor John B. Minor, and in 1889,... one year later, took the degree of Bachelor of Laws. He was preparing to begin the practice of law in LouisVille, Ken- tucky, but was attracted to the then rapidly developing coal and iron section of Southwest Virginia, and in January, 1890, he located at Big Stone Oap, in Southwest Virginia, and began the practice of law, which he has continued to the present time (1906). In 1898-94 he represented the county of Wise in the Virginia house of delegates, but has never held any other political office, preferring to stick to the law and to take a hand in the great development going on in this section of Virginia and adjoining portions of Kentucky and West Virginia.
