king an insurrection, and having betaken himself to the post indicated by it in 1846, was arrested at Posen, and after a dignified and vigorous defence, was condemned to death at Berlin. A rising having taken place at Berlin during the revolution of 1848, he was, with his companions, liberated ; whereupon he placed him- self at the head of the peasants of Posen, the whole of which duchy was in arms; but this revolt was sup* pressed, and he was again thrown into prison. On being released, he put... himself at the head of the Sicilian revolution ; and having been severely wounded in the defence of Catania, he was compelled to leave the island.
Invited by the provisional govern- ment of the grand duchy of Baden to take the command of their army against the Prussians, he obeyed the call, and with a very inferior force for some time held the troops of Generals Peucker and Hirechfeldt in check.
Having been deserted by his cavalry, he fell back on Radstadt, and after a few reverses laid down his arms.
