One could not but admire the energies of German archaeologists who nobly supple- mented the earlier efforts of British excava- tors in an attempt to preserve the ancient treasures of Mesopotamia. The Turks them- selves preserved nothing, and have left no monuments of their own behind them. There is not a single building — ^not even a ruin — a canal, a bridge, or a solitary tree to which we could point as a worthy monument to the centuries of Turkish occupation of Mesopo- tamia.
