To the filtrate, with a volume of not more than 150 cc. , 25 cc. Of ammonia water (. 90 sp. Gr. ) are added, and the flask is shaken until the precipitate coagulates. Twenty-five cc. Of concentrated nitric acid, which should b

The comparatively large amounts of nitric acid and ammonia are required only when 4 to 5 grams of the sample are used and insure the presence of a sufficient quantity of ammonium nitrate which, together with the excess of nitric acid, is essential for the precipitation of pure crystalline ammonium phosphomolybdate. When smaller quantities of the sample are used, the amount of ammonia may be decreased, but there should always be an excess of nitric acid as prescribed.
