He was wearing his military tunic as always. What kind of manoeuvre was he preparing on the eve of the Party Conference? Whom would he try to manipulate? The vanquished Left in order momentarily to strengthen the Right, repudiated by its own members, in order to bring round his own Left (the centre-Left, get it?) which was beginning to mistrust him?
