That nearly allied to the G. Condaminea, the C. Bonplandiana, Kl., has much thicker bast cells even in the thinnest barks. Digitized by Googk 4S cells stand close together in radiated rows/ therefore it is very easy to distinguish it from the present King's Quina of the Calisaya. The bark of the C. Lancifolia, Mut also belongs to this category ; as in the Uritusinga bark of the C. Condaminea the sap-fibres disappear already in the boughs three years old, not indeed in consequence of the formati...on of the bark^ which occurs later^ but in proportion to the extension of the bark cells they contract and at last become imperceptible^ because^ as I have seyeral times re« marked^ new cells form in their cavity, similar to the pareu' chyma cells ; the bast-fibre cells appear in the young branches at first singly, later however they range themselves in the different varieties or variations of this species in very differ- ent ways^ sometimes in radiated rows standing alone, some- times in several single or double rows close together.
