The Committee on the Fire Department [265] to whom was referred the return of the Chief Engineer of Fire Engine C** N° 13 appointing David Willson a fireman of said Company, also a Remon- strance against said appointment presented the following Report against his appointment. The Conmiittee on the Fire Department to whom was referred the return of the Chief Engineer for a member of Fire E...ngine Company N° 13 viz* David Willson, also the remonstrance of several members of said Company against the same Beg leave Respectfully to Report That by an Act of the Legislature of this State passed 9'^ April 1813 it is declared " that it shall be lawful for the Mayor Aldermen & Commonalty of the City of New York in Common Council convened and they are hereby required from time to time to appoint a sufficient number of strong able discreet, honest & sober men, of the said City, willing to accept such appointment being freeholders, or freemen, of the said City, to have the care, management, working and using the Fire Engines &: the other tools & instruments now provided or here- after to be provided for extinguishing of fires within the said City, which persons so to be appointed shall be called the Firemen of the City of New York."
