The deposits of guano, largest and best known, are on the islands and sea coasts of Peru, between the 13th and 21st degrees of south latitude. The material exists in beds of various thicknesses. As much as 60 feet have been known to have accumulated in some places, and GUANO. 21L' it is excavated out like any ordinary quarrying operation. In some cases the deposits have only just commenced on the islands, and it is then of a whitish colour generally j the thicker masses are usually dark grey or... a dingy brown red. The guano birds feed on molluscs, Crustacea, and numerous kinds of fishes, and not only constitute immense flocks, but belong to multitudes of species that have probably been accumulating guano ever since the deluge. A rough estimate has been made by "Walton, of the rate at which guano continues to be deposited in Peru, and he supposes that 30,000 tons are annually deposited. Guano has been long and extensively used by the Peruvians, even as far back as the 12th century, and fro^m the elaborate and systematic manner in which they combined the art of manuring with that of irrigating, they were enabled to convert dry arenaceous land into the most fertile spots in the world.
