These lines of force may be regarded as units, in terms of which magnetism may be expressed and measured.
The direction and polarity of the magnetic force is indicated by the direction and polarity of the lines, the total number of its lines is a measure of the total quantity of magnetism, while the number of them contained in a given unit of area, measured in a direction perpendicular to their direction, is a measure of the intensity of magnetism at that point.
