They protested seriously for some time, but got no redress. Finally, they were able to make things so hot for Mrs. Besant's personal followers on the teaching staff, that they resigned in a body and left. Mrs. Besant has thus lost nearly all her influence in the citadel of Hinduism.
There were also many members of the Society in India who resigned, probably as many as 500 ; but she still re- tains her hold over the great bulk of the Indian membership.
