The Yellowstone Waterway from Yellowstone Park to east of Billings is under close consideration.
It has been designated as a state waterway and is important because it is one of the routes followed by Lewis and Clark. It is a free-flowing stream and has great recreation po- tential. Access areas are being de- veloped along this waterway in con- nection with various communities and with the Forest Service. This will provide opportunity for sports- men to fish and float the Yellow- stone River fo...r various periods in- cluding one-day trips, two-day trips, and three-day trips. This will also — 5 — assure people of areas where they may picnic and camp. The same type of approach will be used on several other rivers. We will be sampling these rivers for fisheries production and for access opportunities. The Madison, the Big Hole, and Rock Creek, which is near Missoula, are the three areas at the moment under close consideration. The commission has also asked that we explore the area from Fort Benton to Fort Peck in connection with the other plans that are being developed and fos- tered by several other groups.
