Faint wagon tracks are still visible where they cross the present Benton Lake National Wildlife Refuge about 12 miles north of Great Falls. The Fort Shaw-Fort McLeod Trail (1867-1900) was originally used as a mail route between Fort Shaw on the Sun River and Fort McLeod, Alberta; it subsequently developed into a freight and stage route. As the "Mon- tana Historic Preservation Plan" notes, "Along its jolting ruts, still visible in places, went whiskey traders, Mounties, Indian iravois, stagecoac...hes and freight wagons drawn by 8 or 10 yoke of oxen." 1 These roads and trails cut by American pioneers are part of our national Unsightly scars left by thoughtless joyriders are resulting in closure of more and more private land to public recreation (DFWP photo: Paul Pacini).
