Prairie falcon (below DFWP photo: Louis Kis). Falcons prefer to prey on other birds, rather than on mammals. mammals. The higher a falconer's bird flies while hunting, the better the bird is said to have performed. A falconer may increase the height to which his bird will climb by choosing the right game bird and the proper terrain. In an attempt to achieve the perfect flight, the falconer will pick a game bird which, because of its nature or the lack of ground cover, will try to outfly the fal...con, rather than elude it on the ground. If a falcon is outflown, it will respond by climbing higher the next time. If the game bird eludes the falcon by land- ing in cover, the falcon realizes its altitude has been a disadvantage and will not climb as high on subsequent flights. More often than not, the game bird escapes: The pheasant makes it to cover, the sharp-tailed grouse per- forms three barrel rolls, an inside loop and a half-gainer flawlessly at top speed or, heaven forbid, the dog was pointing a seven-pound sage grouse which now flies out and shakes its "fist" at falcon and falconer alike.
