What reading level is Montana Outdoors Vol 12 No 4 Jul/aug 1981 book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
^s Paul and I walk upriver, • a fisherman stops us immediately below the Intake irri- gation dam. "I snagged a weird- looking critter and wonder if you guys know what it is," he says. As I reach into his dark minnow bucket, the fisherman yells, "Care- ful! That varmint is loaded with teeth!" My instinct for self-preservation is greater than my curiosity and I quickly jerk my hand out of the minnow bucket. Then, with extreme caution, I slide my hand back into the bucket and emerge with a 10-inch..., silvery fish with lots of teeth. "Well?" the fisherman prods. "A rainbow smelt," I conclude. "I heard that North Dakota planted a bunch of these in Garrison Reservoir, but this is the first I've seen." "Why did North Dakota plant them and what are they doing in the river?" he inquires. "I think they were planted as a source of walleye food," I answer. "Smelt run upstream about the same time of year as walleye to spawn." "With teeth like that, what are those smelt going to do to the little fish in the river?" asks the fisher- man.
