What reading level is Montana Outdoors Vol 16 No 3 May/jun 1985 book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
Anyone who has tried to swim in a Montana lake on a balmy May day knows how cold the water can be! Suddenly falling into cold water pro- duces three bodily reactions. First, it pro- pagates a sudden, involuntary gasp, as if you stepped into a cold shower. This "tor- so reflex" can be deadly if it occurs while the head is underwater. Second, it places a great deal of strain on the heart and cir- culatory system, which can be fata! in older, less physically fit, individuals. Third, it reduces mus...cle performance and stamina. In other words, a person sudden- ly immersed in cold water is at a decided disadvantage in fighting for his life. Interestingly, the cause of death for vic- tims who fall into cold water is often not drowning, but hypothermia — a rapid and drastic chilling of the body core. Resear- chers have found that without some type of body insulation, immersion in water less than 70 °F, even for relatively short periods of time, can be fatal. When im- mersed in cold water, the human body loses heat more quickly than it can be replaced.
