In 1964, the Fish and Game Commission an- nounced a policy calling for discontinuance of the use of hard pesticides on public lands and a re- evaluation of the effects of herbicides. It pointed out the need for more public information about the overall effects of pesticides. In June, 1970, Secretary of the Interior Walter J. Hickel imposed a ban on the use of pesticides on more than 500 million acres of Interior lands. Chemicals completely prohibited include DDT, aldrin, the herbicide 2,4, 5-T,... dieldrin, endrin, mer- cury compounds and nine other lesser-known agents. However, according to an article by AN IT A LIVABLE ENVIRONMENT FOR WILDLIFE IS A QUALITY ENVIRONMENT FOR MAN 14 Richard D. Lyons in a June, 1970, edition of the New York Times, the Interior Department had officially banned DDT in 1964, but it was still in use through 1969. Beginning in late 1969, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced cancellation or suspen- sion of a number of the registered uses of DDT, 2,4, 5-T and one form of mercury.
