What reading level is Montana Outdoors Vol 20 No 3 May/jun 1989 book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
The eyebrows are white and distinctive, the eyes small and yellow. The bill is usually dull yellow but can be yellow- green, yellow-black, or yellow-white. The throat and neck are mottled brown- ish-white giving way to a whitish chest, belly, and sides; conspicuous brown streaks run lengthwise down the front of the body. The back is generally gray with fine, white spotting. The back of the head has a pair of markings that resemble eyes. These oval-shaped "false eyes," which have black centers s...urrounded by whitish borders, meet at a slight slant at the center of the head. It sometimes appears that the black centers have faint white pupils, an effect that could be caused by lighting or feather arrangement— it is difficult to tell. Biologists theorize that the false eyes deter small birds from attacking the owl from behind. Although pygmy-owls do not have prominent ear tufts or "horns" like many other owls, they do have small ear tufts which they raise when alarmed. THERE ARE 15 SPECIES of pygmy owls in the world.
