What reading level is Montana Outdoors Vol 25 No 4 Jul/aug 1994 book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
Birds adapted to a secluded life in the heart of a forest must now nest too close to its edges, where they may be exposed to nest predators and a brood parasite, the brown-headed cowbird. Cowbirds lay their eggs in the nests of other birds for them to tend. These plains natives once feasted on insects found in grasses grazed by bison herds. Depositing their eggs for others to raise suited a nomadic lifestyle. Today, they have proved their versatility by following cattle and cleared lands east a...nd west. Where once the cowbirds had 50 bird species as hosts, now they have more than 150. By comparison, studies of the remaining forests show migrants thriving in preserves like the Adirondacks and Great Smokies. These woodlands are still large enough for the heart-of-the-forest birds to nest and feed safe from predators and cowbirds. For some species, conserving great chunks of forest may not prevent further decline. Their winter homes in the tropics are disappearing under the chainsaw and match.
