The logging industry constitutes another large piece of the state's economic pie. Since 1970, an average of 643 million board feet of timber has been cut annually in Montana national forests. Recent inventory of elk distribution and habitat by the Department of Fish and Game planning division shows 71% of Montana's total elk habitat (35,000 square miles) lies on national forest land. These areas provide most of the 12,000 elk annually bagged by hunters.
