— Karen and Roger Jeffers; Clinton, Wash. MELITA ISLAND- SENSELESS WASTE I am writing to express my con- cern over the future of Flathead Lake's Melita Island. In my opinion — and there are others who feel as I do — development of this island would be a senseless waste of a unique en- vironment. How much better if, in- stead of a private housing develop- ment, this island might be left as a natural area. It just doesn't seem necessary to use a beautiful piece of continued recycled paper land li...ke this island for summer homes when it would be so much better preserved and managed for use by the Boy Scouts and for other related purposes. Can it be that, in our continuing pursuit of a higher standard of liv- ing for all, we need this island for housing? Will this benefit the general public or merely a privileged few? Aren't areas like this essential in maintaining a semblance of quality in our lives? Does a higher standard of living simply mean more material goods and summer homes or could it be that things such as Boy Scout camps, parks, wildlife and natural areas also are involved?
